FR. JOHN R. KENNY, OUR FOUNDING PASTOR, REMEMBERED
This past Tuesday, March 11, at the 8:30 A.M. Mass we prayed in a special way
for Fr. Kenny. It was on March 11, 1985 that our founding pastor was born into
eternal life. From the founding of our parish in 1964, Fr. Kenny – along with 600
families – placed a foundation for us to preach and hear the Gospel with joy, to
build the Kingdom of God with love, and to witness to our encounter with the Lord
to others. It is from this foundation that we are able to prayerfully and playfully
celebrate 50 years of a living community, rooted in 50 years of a living faith.
BEGINNING OUR 50TH YEAR CELEBRATION: ENCOUNTERING
CHRIST TOGETHER
On Saturday, May 17, 2014 our parish will begin a year-long celebration of our
50th year. We begin on the Feast of St. Brendan the Navigator. Mass will be
celebrated at 5:00 P.M. and then the doors of the Fr. Kenny Center will open to our
annual parish dinner and raffle: The Red & White Gala. The evening will include
side boards, basket raffles, silent auction of several items (including dinner cooked
by the Pastor, really, I’m not that bad of a cook!!!). Our parish raffle, great music,
and a wonderful dinner will make for a terrific night.
We will also honor a true Navigator in every way, Fr. Connie Murray. For many
years his leadership and spirituality formed and shaped who we are today. I hope
many will come and take part with him in this night. All proceeds will support the
advancement of the mission of our parish school which is the first ministry
established by our founding pastor, Fr. Kenny.
Thank you to all parishioners who took your envelopes last weekend from the
Gathering Area of the church. Your help and support in distributing and selling
the raffle tickets is deeply appreciated. Dinner tickets will be on sale after Masses
soon. Seating is limited, so please buy tickets early.
50TH YEAR PARISH DIRECTORY
A few weeks ago at all the Masses we had a vote regarding the interest in doing
another St. Brendan Pictorial Parish Directory. The response was overwhelmingly
positive. The planning committee is looking to summer, fall, and winter picturetaking
sessions to get the maximum amount of parish participation. Details will be
forthcoming.
OTHER 50TH EVENTS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Some planning that is coming forth from the Parish Staff, as well as Parish
Pastoral Council, include events to bring us together for spiritual enrichment and
community building. A parish ice cream social at Malley’s, St. Brendan Parish
Day at various sporting events around town, Parish and School Reunion Picnic,
News From the Pews 50th Anniversary Page and a Parish Retreat to actually
“Encounter Christ Together” are all in the works. I am excited to see all this
“launch into deep waters,” as I’m sure St. Brendan himself would say.
Peace,
Fr Tom
